Japanese Bathing Culture

Not a trend. A way of life.

For centuries, bathing in Japan has been daily, unhurried, and deeply personal — a practice of becoming clean, becoming still, and listening.

A culture built on water and respect

In Japan, bathing is not something you rush through between errands. It is woven into daily life — at home, at the neighborhood sento, and at mineral hot springs called onsen.

The ritual always begins the same way: wash thoroughly before you enter the water. Only then do you soak, rest, and move between heat and cool at your own pace.

Soho Saunas is a modern expression of that tradition — adapted for Midway's mountains, but faithful to the spirit of care, cleanliness, and calm.

Onsen

Mineral water as restoration

Onsen are natural hot springs rich in minerals — places where communities have gathered for generations to soak, unwind, and reconnect with nature.

The water itself matters. Mineral-rich soaking is believed to support relaxation and a sense of deep restoration. At Soho, our tubs use natural spring water from Midway, refreshed daily and kept at a steady 104°F.

Daily bathing

A rhythm, not a special occasion

In Japanese homes and neighborhoods, bathing is part of the everyday — not reserved for vacations or spa days.

The evening bath clears the body and mind before rest. The morning soak can set a calm tone for the day. Whether at a local sento or in a private tub, the emphasis is the same: arrive clean, move slowly, and give yourself permission to be unhurried.

Heat & cold

The daily plunge

Alternating between heat and cold is a familiar rhythm in Japanese bathing culture — not as a performance or a challenge, but as a natural contrast that sharpens the senses and settles the nervous system.

A warm soak opens the body. Cool water brings clarity. Rest between rounds. Repeat at your pace.

This is the same cycle guests experience at Soho — sauna, cold plunge, mineral water, and stillness — without a clock or a score to hit.

Cleanse first

Enter the water with respect. Wash thoroughly and leave the outside world behind.

Move at your pace

Between heat, cold, and rest — no protocol to master and no routine to optimize.

Simple. Intentional. Unhurried.

The spirit of Soho in every shower, soak, and moment of stillness.

Your body already knows this

Humans have been bathing, soaking, and gathering around water for thousands of years. At Soho, we honor a tradition practiced in homes and hot springs across Japan — where the goal is simply to become clean, become still, and listen.
